3. Course Preview & What Wins Here
El Cardonal is Tiger Woods' first completed course design (opened 2014)—a wide, desert-meets-ocean resort layout in Cabo. Generous fairways and oversized greens mean nearly the whole field hits plenty of greens in regulation, turning the tournament into an aggressive birdie-and-putting contest. Winning scores across its first three PGA Tour editions (2023–2025) were 27 under, 24 under, and 29 under, with all three champions firing a Sunday 63.
What Wins Here
Across the three PGA Tour editions played at El Cardonal (2023 Erik van Rooyen at -27, 2024 Austin Eckroat at -24, and 2025 Ben Griffin at -29) and all 30 top-10 finishers:
- Putting and birdie volume rule the week: All three winners finished top 4 in the field in fewest putts per green hit that week (2nd, 4th, and 2nd — averaging 3rd) and top 9 in total birdies (9th, 1st, and 3rd — averaging 4th).
- Top-10 profile: 24 of 30 top-10 finishers ranked top 15 in birdies that week, 18 of 30 ranked top 15 in putting, and 16 of 30 ranked top 15 in greens hit.
- Hot putters beat season-long ball-striking resumes: Only 3 of 29 top-10 finishers with full-season stats entered inside the Tour's top 50 in ball striking that year, and van Rooyen won ranked 156th in total strokes gained. Carson Young has posted top-10s in all three editions (9th, T2, T6).
The 3 key stats here: Putting, Birdies, and Greens Hit (plus Approach for context).
4. Who's Hot (and Who's Cold)

5. Odds 101
`+350` means a $100 bet wins $350; `-400` means you risk $400 to win $100. Prices below were locked Tuesday morning (Nov 3, ~7 AM MT) from public exchange and sportsbook numbers; *"model fair"* is our model's no-edge price.
6. Best Plays — 3 Tiers (Chalk · The Value Rack · Longshots)
All unit tracking is 100% simulated paper tracking (1 flat unit per play, 0 real dollars staked). Our model is still in forward-testing and has not beaten the market yet, so treat these as model leans.
Chalk
Why: Defending champ (-29, 2nd in putting last year) with the model's highest top-20 and make-cut probability, though his +1550 outright price is too short.
Why: Back-to-back T4 and 3rd finishes with strong putting and birdie ranks; outright odds are steamed, so top 20 is the steadier angle.
Why: Already a Tour winner this summer and liked even harder by our all-stats experimental model, with plus money available for a top 20.
The Value Rack
Why: Cleanest overlap of recent form and course profile in the mid-tier, priced slightly above our fair top-20 odds.
Why: Elite tee-to-green form on an 8-cut streak with an outright price longer than our fair number if the putter cooperates.
Why: Best statistical course fit in the field on paper (1st in greens hit and approach, 3rd in birdies) with six straight top-30s.
Why: Elite birdie maker (11th on Tour) whose scoring ceiling fits a 25-under shootout.
Longshots
Why: Proven Tour closer whose +252 top-20 tag is our model's biggest placement gap versus market pricing.
Why: Trending up (T21, T13 in his last two outings) at an outright number slightly longer than our fair line.
Why: Quietly checks approach, birdie, and putting boxes at triple-digit outright odds.
Why: Course horse at El Cardonal priced well past our +15900 fair number.
7. DFS Picks — Same 3 Tiers + Sample Lineups
Selected players and 1 sample build only — never a full-slate salary sheet. FanDuel salaries were not publicly posted at lock, and pre-lock ownership is unlisted.
Chalk
Why: Highest make-cut (86%) and top-20 projection on the slate—safest cash-game anchor.
Why: Hottest golfer in the field at $300 less than Gerard.
Why: High birdie ceiling, though the priciest of the top trio.
The Value Rack
Why: Projects like a $9,000+ golfer at a mid-tier tag.
Why: Course-fit putter at a comfortable mid-range salary.
Why: Birdie volume gives him tournament upside.
Bargain Bin
Why: Best points-per-dollar value in our model.
Why: Elite putter on a putting contest layout.
Why: Salary saver in solid form.

8. Last Week's Results & Model Lab
Last Week: VidantaWorld Mexico Open: Andrew Novak won by five at 25 under; he was on our pre-tournament list at +4154 (13th-ranked win pick), with 4 of our 17 starters finishing top 10 and 9 finishing top 20. Our sample DraftKings cash lineup scored 584.0 points with all 6 golfers making the cut.
Model Lab — Current vs. All-Stats v6: Across 1 graded side-by-side event (Mexico), market odds were sharpest on top 10 and top 20, our baseline model edged the cut market slightly, and the 395-stat v6 model scored best on outright winner—still a tiny 1-event sample, so both models remain in zero-dollar tracking.
Model Lab — Weekly Research-Then-Test: Inspired by Bürgi, Deng & Whelan's research on prediction-market longshot bias and DataGolf's studies on bookmaker margin in golf, we tested longshot-bias calibration across 39 unseen PGA Tour events (5,610 prices). Golf exchange prices proved well calibrated (1–5% win shots won right in line with price), so fading longshots did not beat fees. Next week's test: re-weighting strokes-gained categories.
9. Season Scoreboard (Simulated 1u Tracking)
1 flat simulated unit per play locked Tuesday pre-tournament (0 real dollars staked). Starting Week 1 = WWT Championship (Nov 5–8, 2026).
