2. 🎯 Pin Seeking (Our 5 Favorite Bets — 1u Simulated Each)

  1. Ben James — Win +2250 (1u sim): The hottest player in the field and our model's overall favorite, priced longer than our +1933 fair number.
  2. Séamus Power — Top 20 +208 (1u sim): Finished 2nd in Bermuda two weeks ago and ranks 8th on Tour in putting and 16th in birdies—the exact blueprint for El Cardonal.
  3. Nick Taylor — Top 20 +252 (1u sim): Our model's widest top-20 edge over the market (fair +226) at a plus-money number.
  4. Keith Mitchell — Win +3970 (1u sim): Ranks 11th on Tour in birdie average on a resort track that turns into a four-day birdie race.
  5. Matt Kuchar — Win +23271 (1u sim): Finished runner-up here in 2023 while leading the field in putting, and our model makes him +15900 fair.

3. Course Preview & What Wins Here

El Cardonal is Tiger Woods' first completed course design (opened 2014)—a wide, desert-meets-ocean resort layout in Cabo. Generous fairways and oversized greens mean nearly the whole field hits plenty of greens in regulation, turning the tournament into an aggressive birdie-and-putting contest. Winning scores across its first three PGA Tour editions (2023–2025) were 27 under, 24 under, and 29 under, with all three champions firing a Sunday 63.

The one stat to ignore: driving distance. None of the three El Cardonal winners cracked the top 40 in driving distance the week they won (43rd, 60th, and 60th), and only 4 of the 30 top-10 finishers ranked top 15 in distance.

What Wins Here

Across the three PGA Tour editions played at El Cardonal (2023 Erik van Rooyen at -27, 2024 Austin Eckroat at -24, and 2025 Ben Griffin at -29) and all 30 top-10 finishers:

  • Putting and birdie volume rule the week: All three winners finished top 4 in the field in fewest putts per green hit that week (2nd, 4th, and 2nd — averaging 3rd) and top 9 in total birdies (9th, 1st, and 3rd — averaging 4th).
  • Top-10 profile: 24 of 30 top-10 finishers ranked top 15 in birdies that week, 18 of 30 ranked top 15 in putting, and 16 of 30 ranked top 15 in greens hit.
  • Hot putters beat season-long ball-striking resumes: Only 3 of 29 top-10 finishers with full-season stats entered inside the Tour's top 50 in ball striking that year, and van Rooyen won ranked 156th in total strokes gained. Carson Young has posted top-10s in all three editions (9th, T2, T6).

The 3 key stats here: Putting, Birdies, and Greens Hit (plus Approach for context).

4. Who's Hot (and Who's Cold)

"Better than usual" compares each golfer's strokes per round vs. the field over his last 8 starts against his own baseline since mid-2024 (newest finishes listed first; MC = missed cut).

  • 🔥 Ben James: T16, MC, T5, 2, 3, T38, MC, T4 — scoring 1.8 strokes per round better than his usual, the biggest surge among contenders (rookie sample, so treat with care).
  • 🔥 Séamus Power: 2, T21, T7, MC, MC, T10, T11, MC — scoring 0.9 strokes/round better than usual. ✅ Fits What Wins Here (8th in putting, 16th in birdies).
  • 🔥 Jordan Smith: T16, T4, T26, T55, T14, T31, T39, T18 — scoring 0.9 strokes/round better than usual with 8 straight made cuts. Partial fit (9th in greens hit, 117th in putting).
  • 🔥 Billy Horschel: T21, T13, T43, T12, MC, T13, MC, MC — scoring 0.9 strokes/round better than usual, 4 straight made cuts.
  • 🔥 Chris Kirk: T6, T21, T10, T72, T8, T31, T61, MC — scoring 0.9 strokes/round better than usual. Partial fit (28th in birdies, 151st in putting).
  • 🔥 Mackenzie Hughes: T4, T25, MC, T24, T29, MC, T44, T20 — scoring 0.75 strokes/round better than usual. ✅ Fits What Wins Here (29th in putting, T7 here in 2023).

Who's Cold: Aldrich Potgieter (2 of 8 cuts made, ~3.0 strokes/round below his baseline) and Taylor Pendrith (2 of 8 cuts made, ~1.2 strokes/round below baseline).

5. Odds 101

`+350` means a $100 bet wins $350; `-400` means you risk $400 to win $100. Prices below were locked Tuesday morning (Nov 3, ~7 AM MT) from public exchange and sportsbook numbers; *"model fair"* is our model's no-edge price.

6. Best Plays — 3 Tiers (Chalk · The Value Rack · Longshots)

All unit tracking is 100% simulated paper tracking (1 flat unit per play, 0 real dollars staked). Our model is still in forward-testing and has not beaten the market yet, so treat these as model leans.

8. Last Week's Results & Model Lab

Last Week: VidantaWorld Mexico Open: Andrew Novak won by five at 25 under; he was on our pre-tournament list at +4154 (13th-ranked win pick), with 4 of our 17 starters finishing top 10 and 9 finishing top 20. Our sample DraftKings cash lineup scored 584.0 points with all 6 golfers making the cut.

Model Lab — Current vs. All-Stats v6: Across 1 graded side-by-side event (Mexico), market odds were sharpest on top 10 and top 20, our baseline model edged the cut market slightly, and the 395-stat v6 model scored best on outright winner—still a tiny 1-event sample, so both models remain in zero-dollar tracking.

Model Lab — Weekly Research-Then-Test: Inspired by Bürgi, Deng & Whelan's research on prediction-market longshot bias and DataGolf's studies on bookmaker margin in golf, we tested longshot-bias calibration across 39 unseen PGA Tour events (5,610 prices). Golf exchange prices proved well calibrated (1–5% win shots won right in line with price), so fading longshots did not beat fees. Next week's test: re-weighting strokes-gained categories.

9. Season Scoreboard (Simulated 1u Tracking)
